Probiotics

Source

Dr. Briffa's latest blog post about probiotics is very interesting. As someone who takes probiotics daily, I especially found it interesting that they may help prevent common illnesses, such as cold or flu, in children. I've been giving my kids probiotics as well and now that I think about it, we have had less of the sickies around here than we usually do. Of course the true test may come when winter sets in and everyone we come in contact with is hacking and sniffling.

For those who aren't familiar with probiotics, here's the definition from Wikipedia:

Probiotics are dietary supplements of live microorganisms thought to be healthy for the host organism. According to the currently adopted definition by FAO/WHO, probiotics are: "Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host". Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and bifidobacteria are the most common types of microbes used as probiotics; but also certain yeasts and bacilli are available.

At first, probiotics were thought to beneficially affect the host by improving its intestinal microbial balance, thus inhibiting pathogens and toxin producing bacteria. Today specific health effects are being investigated and documented including alleviation of chronic intestinal inflammatory diseases, prevention and treatment of pathogen-induced diarrhea, urogenital infections, and atopic diseases.

I buy my probiotics from GNC and, if I remember correctly, they contain around 14 million live bacteria. (Do they pay someone to sit in a lab and look at these with a micrscope, while they count 14 million of these little suckers???)

For those of you who eat store bought yogurt, (watch those carbs!) Activa has probiotics in it as well, but I'm told it's not as effective as taking the supplements.

I'm branching out...

Well. Not really. I stumbled across this crazy website from another blog I like to read. You pick the characters, the backgrounds, the voices, etc. Then add in actions, sound effects and type in the text. Makes a fun little animated movie.

What does this have to do with low-carb? Well, it really doesn't. Has more to do with the fact that I still have a fat behind and my kids noticed it one day. Usually I tell you about these funny conversations in the whole "he said, she said" dialog. Today I thought It'd be fun to make a movie about this most recent humiliation. Besides, making it and laughing after wards has been a great stress reliever. So, without further ado, enjoy the first in my little series I call Adventures in Raising Kids. (You'll have to use your imagination and envision the props, like the laundry that needs folding, etc.)

Ads make our kids fat

I found a rather interesting research article today and decided to give my take on it. You can check it out below if you like:

Attention All Parents

Remember the days when we would get up, eat breakfast, take off on our bikes and ride all over town? Sometimes we wouldn't go back home until later in the afternoon, and our parents weren't really worried about us. They believed we were safe, and we felt safe as well! Sadly those days are gone....

My biggest fear for my children has always been that someone would kidnap them and/or hurt them. I'm a very careful, maybe even over-cautious, parent. A friend send me the link of a website called Family WatchDog. This site allows you to type in your address and see any registered sex offenders in your area. I decided to give this website a try and find out what my area is like in this regard.

OH. MY. STARS.

My kids will never leave the house again.

I'm just kidding. But I will be keeping a more watchful eye on them while they are outside, especially if they aren't playing in the fenced-in back yard. We have an unbelievable 33 offenders in our area. Many of them live less than a mile from me and are guilty of molesting children under 13. There were also a few who fell into the abuse of 13-18 age range. What is this world coming to???

So I'll be reminding my kids frequently of the dangers strangers can pose and guarding their outside movements closely. If you'd like to learn more about your neighborhood, which I highly recommend you do, you can check it out for yourself here at www.familywatchdog.us.

I refuse to be paranoid, but I do plan on being armed with knowledge. This is one more step in keeping my most beloved possessions safe... my children.

The Yucky-Blucky Flu...

Sorry I've been absent lately. Major changes in our lives have kept me super busy. Lots of traveling, catching-up on school, etc.

This week we have the great privilege (not) of playing host to the stomach flu. Thankfully for my husband, he's out of town and gets to miss all the fun. Lysol has become my best friend this week. If only we could ingest it to kill the germs inside.... But no. This stuff has to run it's course. So yay for me. I've purchased an industrial size bottle of Children's Motrin and a Huge box of sugar-free Popsicles, along with a truckload of Hefty trash bags for the many trash cans that are strategically placed around the house until this is over. So if you have stock in any of these companies, I have probably single-handedly just raised your profits. I'd like to say you are welcome.. but I'd be lying. ;0)

So I'll be checking back in when everyone is well. We'd appreciate prayers for us all. I haven't gotten it yet and hope not to. BUT, with the way I've been eating lately (diet? what diet?) I doubt my immune system is in the best shape. Let's hope it's up to the challenge.

Wacky Wednesday

Happy Hump Day Everyone!!

Weight-loss has been non-existent for me. I've been so busy that I can't seem to make the time to eat properly. That is stopping as of today. I've printed off several new recipes and am going to do some prep work today to be sure I have the right foods on hand when I need them. No more eating on the run! And if I do need to eat on the go, I will be prepared.

Minor Subject change...

My children and I have been working on another video blog. We filmed the thing several times (I've lost count.. yeah.. THAT many times!) and we can't seem to get it to "come out" right. The one we tried last night is almost 13 minutes long! I'm afraid that's just a bit too much. What is sad is I probably edited out 2 or 3 more minutes, so it was longer. I think my biggest problem is the the kids distract me. I'm trying to think (and not say "uh" a billion times like I did in my last one) and they are looking at the webcam and making faces. This may be the only one I do with them, but I'm determined to do it because they have their hearts set on helping me with it. So...... hopefully someday soon I'll have it posted. Thankfully my new webcam came with software that allows me to edit, add titles, photos, and music. I'm gonna need it.

Sorta Subject change...

This blog has grown in ways I'd never imagined since I started it just over a year ago. We are quickly closing in on having our 10,000th visitor! To celebrate I will be giving away some low-carb items. I have a couple of the items now and am putting together the rest.. so keep watching for the announcement about it soon!

Major Subject change...

The photo I donated for the Silent Auction did well. I have not yet gotten the total, but I was told it was heavily bid on. Knowing that really encourages me. :0) I'll be sure to let you know what it sold for.

Have a great day!

A little bit of everything (which contains a whole lot of nuthin')

Hope everyone had a great weekend! Mine was nice. We had a birthday get-together at my parents house on Saturday. (Hubby and myself have birthdays two weeks apart, so we took care of it all at once.) My mom did her best to make sure everything was sugar free so I was able to at least sample everything. She smoked a brisket for several hours... and wow was it good!

Yep, I get older this Sunday. It's funny how aging doesn't intimidate me as much as it used to. I guess I've finally realized I can't do anything about it, so why let it bother me. It's just gonna happen.

School will be starting for my kiddos soon. For most stay-at-home parents that means free time. That will not be the case for me this year. I'll actually be even busier. We have decided to home school this year. This isn't anything new to me. I'm home schooled my kids before. I enjoyed the 2 years off we had when they attended the private school, but the expense is more than we can handle this year. I'm telling you all this to explain that my blogging may very well be cut back a good bit until we get our schedule figured out. I also have my photo school to fit in, which I'll admit has been somewhat neglected as of late. So we'll have to see how it goes. In the meantime I ask that you hang with me as I figure it out. It's all about balance.

My weight loss has been at a stand still. Today I'm going to be much more careful with my food choices. I think a couple of choices in the last few days have kicked me out of ketosis. I'll keep you posted.

Gotta run! Have a great one!

June 26, 2007

This post will be a quickie. I have a house full of boys today. My son had 3 of his friends spend the night last night. All brothers ranging from 14 to 10. Then add my 10 year old son and 8 year old daughter. I amazed I still have any hair in my head.

I'm taking them to the park in a little while and hope they wear themselves completely out. Then I plan on taking them home before I lose what few shreds of sanity I have left.

After they are gone I get to spend the rest of the day finishing laundry. We leave again in the morning for a few days. Getting to travel with my husband is spoiling me. It makes it harder when I can't go. *sigh* Such is life. Anyhoo.. I'll try to post from our hotel room.

As for weight-loss...

I was down another 8/10ths of a lb today. So 170.2 on the scale. Just 3/10ths of a lb and I'll see the 160's again! I suspected before I stepped on the scale that it would be down. I "felt thinner" if that makes any sense. I think that makes around 3.5 lbs I've lost this week. (My weeks are running Wed. to Tues for Jimmy Moore's 30-in-30 Challege.) I just love the low-carb lifestyle! Onward and downward!

Saying for today:

If at first you don't succeed, look in the trash for the instructions.

Pregnancy Q&A (funny)

Just something funny for the parents out there. Enjoy!

Pregnancy Q & A

Q: Should I have a baby after 35?
A: No, 35 children is enough.

Q: I'm two months pregnant now. When will my baby move?
A: With any luck, right after he finishes college

Q: What is the most reliable method to determine a baby's sex?
A: Childbirth.

Q: My wife is five months pregnant and so moody that sometimes she's borderline irrational.
A: So what's your question?

Q: My childbirth instructor says it's not pain I'll feel during labor, but pressure. Is she right?
A: Yes , in the same way that a tornado might be called an air current.

Q: When is the best time to get an epidural?
A: Right after you find out you're pregnant.

Q: Is there any reason I have to be in the delivery room while my wife is in labor?
A: Not unless the word "alimony" means anything to you.

Q: Is there anything I should avoid while recovering from childbirth?
A: Yes, pregnancy.

Q: Do I have to have a baby shower?
A: Not if you change the baby's diaper very quickly

Q: Our baby was born last week. When will my wife begin to feel and act normal again?
A: When the kids are in college.

May 24, 2007

I'm down again today. The weight gain the scale showed yesterday, which was just under 1/2 a lb is gone. So now I'm back at 179 even.

I'm feeling a bit better than I did yesterday. I walked on the treadmill this morning for just over 30 minutes. I seemed wear out quickly, which I guess could be because of TOM. Usually when the 30 minutes are up I've kind of caught my second wind and can walk a while longer. Today I couldn't seem to find that extra umph. I also did 10 minutes of Pilates for my stomach. It doesn't sound like much, but believe me, I'll be sore tomorrow.

I'm not as hungry today as I have been the last couple of days. I made it through the whole morning without needing a snack to get me by.

I've really been craving some Chocoperfection bars lately. Maybe I'll make those one of my rewards after reaching goal. :0)

OH... I have to tell you this! It's just so sweet. My daughter just asked me if I was ready for lunch. I said yes and that I'd finish up typing and make us all something to eat. She just came back in with a cold can of Diet Coke and a chicken salad sandwich (on toast) for me. She even wrote on the paper plate in marker "I Love You Mom!" She melts my heart when she does things like that for me. I hugged her and thanked her. I asked her if she wanted my sandwich because I couldn't eat bread. She said yes and started laughing because she'd forgot about the bread part. She then comes back in with a plate for me, just chicken salad this time, and a fork. Isn't she the best!

Last night we finally got the grill I won put together. I haven't take a picture yet, but I will soon. We have to buy a couple of propane tanks today so we can use it. The hardest part will be figuring out what I want to cook on it first! :0) I'm thinking of inviting family over on Memorial day for a big cookout.

Ok.. lots to do today so I'd better get going. Keep me in your prayers tonight. I have that wedding rehearsal and dinner. I hope I can resist the temptation. It's not so much the food.. but more the social eating pressures. I feel awkward when everyone else is eating and I'm just sitting there. I also worry the host/hostess will think I'm being rude or don't like their food. LOL

Healthy Habits Combat Childhood Obesity

In the past, when someone thought of obesity, a child was rarely the first thing to come to mind. Children were highly active little creatures who never seemed to slow down. I can count on one hand the overweight children I grew up with.

Sadly, times have changed. According to the National Center for Chronic Disease and Health Promotion, "The prevalence of overweight among children aged 6 to 11 more than doubled in the past 20 years, going from 7% in 1980 to 18.8% in 2004. The rate among adolescents aged 12 to 19 more than tripled, increasing from 5% to 17.1%."

Wow. Those are some scary numbers! Obesity, in itself, is an awful thing to deal with as a child. While most adults have the tact and manners to be, at the least, polite to a person who is overweight, children can unknowingly be quite cruel. Taunting, name calling, bullying, and exclusion are just a few of the afflictions an overweight child will suffer through on a daily basis. But there is much more at stake here than self-confidence. With obesity comes deteriorating health. This isn't just an issue for adults. Children can suffer from diabetes, cancer, heart disease, depression and a myriad of other problems. In fact, a recent study in the Journal of the Academy of Pediatrics discovered that overweight girls tend to hit puberty earlier than normal, which can lead to serious health concerns.

So what is the best way to tackle this growing problem? One word. Prevention.

As parents, educators, and role models, we need to be sure our children are receiving the proper messages about what is and is not healthy. In a society that becomes more confusing with each passing day, we MUST be the clear voice of reason. We can not leave children to their own devices and decisions about what is good for them.

So how do we successfully convey the message of healthy living to our children? TODAY nutritionist Joy Bauer has few suggestions and shared them in this article titled 10 Ways To Keep Your Kids From Getting Fat.

She had some great suggestions which I’d like to highlight here.

Number one on Joy’s list is being a healthy role model. Children tend to want to be just like Mom or Dad. If they see you eating potato chips, all the while you’re telling them they should eat fruits and vegetables for snacks, which do you think they’ll chose? Children look up to their parents, not only as heroes, but for guidance. Make sure you practice what you preach, or it will never sink in. As an example, my daughter started watching what I ate very closely when I started my low-carb plan. Now she no longer eats the bun on her Arby’s sandwiches. She says it’s good for her and tastes better that way.

Joy also mentions making healthy food choices fun. Games, taste tests - get creative! I know from personal experience that letting your children help with meal preparation works wonders. While my son will eat anything that isn’t nailed down, my picky daughter won't touch certain foods. One day I asked her to help me cook dinner. The next thing we knew, she was announcing, with pride, that she’d cooked the broccoli and everyone should try it because it is delicious. Of course this meant she’d have to eat some too. Rarely has she made something she didn’t like, once she tried it.

Another idea Joy mentions is using her 90/10 food strategy, which constitutes 90% healthy choices and 10% junk. I don’t deny my kids the “fun” foods. How hard would it be for a child to attend a birthday party and not get any cake or ice cream? But I also do my best to limit the poison, in the form of simple carbs, they ingest. I don’t want them to develop the carb addictions I’ve battled for so many years.

Suggestions number four, six, seven, and eight involve feeding them a healthy breakfast, loading them up on fiber, limiting starchy veggies, and keeping healthy veggies on hand at all times.

I do take issue with her fifth suggestion, which recommends switching children over to non-fat and low-fat foods after the age of two. Her specific example was milk, cheese and yogurt. She subscribes to the common food pyramid belief that the lower-fat counterparts will be a better choice because of the caloric content. I simply cannot go along with that line of thinking. I rarely allow my children to have anything labeled low-fat. Most of the time a low-fat label can be translated to read: "conatins sugar or high fructose corn syrup". Those are two items I prefer my children cut way back on. And don’t think for a minute that children react to carbs any different than adults. My daughter can, and will, eat candy until she’s sick. She can’t seem to help herself. Where if I set a plate of veggies and meat in front of her, she’ll eat until she’s satisfied and then stop. Another thing to consider is the satiety factor. Which item do you think kids will be more likely to overeat – skim milk or whole milk? Odds are the whole milk will make them feel full much faster, due to the fat content, and they will drink less. Fat is not the enemy.

Her ninth suggestion discourages drinking empty calories. I couldn’t agree more. Thankfully she isn’t suggesting fruit juice as an alternative to sugary sodas.

While a healthy diet is a huge factor in preventing obesity, there is one more element that is crucial to staying healthy. Joy addresses this in the last tip, which I’ve quoted below...

“Encourage daily exercise

Get you kids moving and keep them moving – aim for an hour each day. Limit the TV and video games …. and encourage after school sports, bike riding, long walks, jumping rope, hide and seek, rock hunting…anything goes.”

Here is where I personally feel a majority of the guilt lies. With the progress of technology, we have seen children’s entertainment rapidly morph into a state of sedation. Children can be found all over the world in a vegetative state, watching the latest TV program, playing the latest video game, surfing the net. How many of today’s kids do you know that have ever played kick the can? I fear that not only are we raising a generation of couch potatoes, but worry that the imaginations of many children have stagnated. We need to do more than encourage activity. We need to encourage imaginative thinking. A child is much more likely to participate in something that involves their mind and body. Again, this is my personal observation based on my experience as a mother, and for several years, a pre-school teacher. I can’t provide research to back this theory up, but I believe I’m on target here. Children love a good challenge!

So while we work on improving our own health, let’s make sure we are focusing on the health of our children as well. Just a little extra effort can make a big difference. And aren’t our children worth it?

4 Topics for today...

There is so much to post about today that I don't even know where to start!

Topic #1: Let's start with one of Jimmy's latest blog posts. Today he posted more great blogs that I can't wait to check out. Ten of them to be exact. As I read down the post I was thrilled and honored to see that my website was #3! Here are his exact words:

3. Healthy Low-Carb Living

This isn't a blog, but it is one of the best-looking low-carb resources I have seen in a very long time from one of my most faithful readers--Sparky's Girl! "Healthy Low-Carb Living" organizes just about everything you could ever want about livin' la vida low-carb in one lovely package. You can read her and her husband's weight loss success stories, see pictures, find low-carb tips and links, see the myths addressed, and so much more! Check it out along with the companion "Healthy Low-Carb Living" blog.

How great is that?!?! I guess I'd better get a scoot on it and finished up the last few pages that are not working yet! I still haven't finished the myths page, the cookbooks page.. and to be honest the front page still looks pretty bare. But my goal is to have all those things finished sometime this morning. Anyway.. Thanks for the mention Jimmy! It really is an honor and I'm so glad you like the site!

Topic #2:
My weight has stayed the same on the scale for the past couple of days. I've actually eaten less than normal this weekend due to not feeling too well. I can feel a bit of water retention, but nothing too major. So yesterday I get out of the shower and go up to my room to dress. I'm standing there in my underthings and happened to glance at myself in the mirror. I had to do a double take! Was that really me? Could 17 lbs really make that much difference? I was amazed. I was seeing MUCH less of me. Areas that had rolls are starting to flatten out, my stomach doesn't stick out so much anymore, and my arms and legs are showing marked improvements. I ran downstairs like an idiot to tell my husband what I'd seen (I was acting like I'd seen a miracle, and some ways I felt like I had). He smiled and told me how proud he was of me and how he'd noticed the same thing. He just told his parents a couple of days ago how well I was doing and that he couldn't remember exactly how much I'd lost, but it was really showing. It's so nice to have that kind of confirmation. It really helps you keep going!

Topic 3#:
Moderated comments. I have decided to moderate all comments on this blog. Not to be a dictator, but to keep offensive material and spam from showing up. I don't always have time to check the comments daily and I certainly don't want something offensive sitting there for several hours before I catch it. I get loads of spam in my website guestbook and have to delete it all the time. I have no problem listening to other opinions on the subjects we discuss here, as long as they are made in a kind and courteous manner. I will not tolerate hateful or vulgar comments though. They will simply be deleted. I know some subjects can become heated and emotions will run high, but not here. That's not why I started this blog. If someone wants to debate the merits and faults of this or that, find a forum for just that purpose. Also keep in mind that I have a very dry sense of humor.. and tend to use it when things get uncomfortable. I did so a couple of days ago after a post on a friend's blog got a bit personal and nasty. I guess one of the posters doesn't have a sense of humor. :0)

Topic #4: I think I'm fighting the bug my children had last week, though not as severe. My stomach has been upset off and on since Friday. So after finishing up my website, I'll probably take it easy today. I was only able to finish about half of my 11 oz. protein shake this morning before I felt a little sick. So anyhoo.. I doubt I'll be walking on the treadmill today.

Well, I'd better stop here. I plan on doing a couple of product reviews later today or early tomorrow. If I'm not spending the day bowing at the porcelain throne, I'll get them posted asap for ya.

Have a great one!

Learning Balance...

I'm realizing this week just how unbalanced I've been lately. I'm having to learn to juggle several things and divide my time and energy up wisely. It's really put some things into perspective for me. It seems like I'm always so busy, even before I started working again. But now that I'm working something has changed. I'm seeing that while there will always be something to get done, I don't NEED to do it all right now. The last two nights I've been pretty tired so I just sat down and played Polly Pockets with my daughter. We had so much fun together and I realized how much I've missed by not taking that extra time to spend with my kids. It has now become my daily priority to spend at least a few minutes each day playing with my kids. Before I can blink they will be grown and too old for playing with Mommy anymore. I must embrace these days while I have them. So what if my house isn't spotless. So what if the dishes are still in the sink. They aren't going anywhere. I can do them after the kids are in bed or while they are at school, or while I'm on a work break (yep.. I'm working from home).

I also see that I need to balance my spiritual life. I seem to get sidetracked too easy. I'm either not getting my private devotional time in at all, or just speeding through it because I'm so busy. What good does that to do me? So I'm spending each morning with God and enjoying the time. Each day is getting better and I'm feeling closer. It's amazing how much better I handle the day when I've spend time with God first. I've always known that was the key, but sometimes I tend to have a lapse in memory.

Eating also must be balanced. Why is this so tough? I'll never figure it out. I just know I have a built-in penchant for foods that I do not need to be eating. Have you ever gorged on a salad? Nah.. me neither. But give me a box of chocolates or some fries... I'll eat until I'm sick. That's why I love low carb. It helps me control those self-destructive urges and helps me focus on my health.

Today I'm trying to be very good. I'm not sure what lunch will be or where it will be, but I'll try to find something acceptable. I'm working on moving things around in my office where I can use my treadmill on my breaks. I think that would be just what I need to keep me going throughout the day!

Well, work is calling. Have a great day all!

P.S. One of these days I'll get back to updating my menu on the sidebar.. just bear with me while I figure out the balance and where this blog fits in as well. :0)
